Kayaking past waterfalls on the Khong River

Khong & Pai Rivers Wilderness Kayaking

Full day · dry season

If you like wilderness kayaking through untouched primary forest with fun rapids on a clean river, then these dry season trips are the best Thailand has to offer.

We run about 45 km on the Khong and Pai rivers, from the magnificent Susa Falls to near Mae Hong Son town. This is a big day with increasingly bigger water and rapids. The scenery is unsurpassed: natural forested valleys and gorges with some of Thailand’s best teak and mixed deciduous forests.

The rapids are grade 2 and 3. Most adventurous people with some canoeing/kayaking experience or an adventurous attitude have no problems paddling their own single or double boats. We use inflatable kayaks, which are perfect for these rivers. By the time you hit the Pai River after a few hours on the Khong, the usual attitude is “bring it on!”

People with less confidence or lacking the strength for a long paddle can sit with one of our guides (2 on each trip), but it is more fun in your own boat.

Towards the end of the dry season (March/April), many slower sections involve quite a bit of paddling, so expect sore arms the next day!

Tours start from 5 people; smaller groups are also welcome if you make up the difference.
